The City of Fort Collins Engineering Department has been busy at the intersection of Vine Drive and Shields Street constructing a roundabout and multi-modal improvements. Initial work is within Larimer County’s existing road closure and on Vine Drive between Shields Street and Wood Street.
The next phase of construction will begin following the opening of Shields Street on October 2. Vine Drive will be closed for three weeks between Hanna Drive and Shields Street starting October 5. Full closure will allow the City’s contractor to complete the majority of impactful work approximately two weeks ahead of schedule.
Local resident and business access will continue to remain open. Once Shields Street opens to through traffic, northbound and southbound traffic will remain open for the duration of the project.
As with all City construction projects, the public is reminded to please drive slowly and safely in construction zones.
Vine and Shields Intersection Improvements Project Objectives
The project will remove the existing traffic signals and construct a modern single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Vine Drive and Shields Street. Utility improvements, including storm water quality features (rain gardens), have been coordinated with the project. Sidewalks and bike lanes will be installed. Upon completion of the intersection and Larimer County’s North Shields project, bike lanes and sidewalks will connect Vine Drive to the Poudre Trail.
Goals of the project include:
- Improve safety and overall efficiency for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.
- Reduce the accident rate by correcting the horizontal geometry.
- Improve air quality by reducing vehicle wait times.
- Construct landscaping, streetscape elements and Art in Public Places.
