As a Chamber member, we know that you value the opportunities that come when housing is affordable, inclusive, and thoughtful in design. That’s why we are asking that you DO NOT SIGN the petition to repeal the Land Development Code that will be circulating around Fort Collins over the next few weeks.

Wait, what’s happening?
After years of community engagement and input, City Council recently adopted code that prioritized housing affordability and support of healthy, connected communities. A group called “Preserve Fort Collins” has launched a misleading campaign to repeal the code updates, and they begin collecting signatures today. Get more information here.

How does this affect the Community?
The last major update to the Fort Collins Land Development Code was in 1997. Your Chamber, along with affordable housing providers and other key stakeholders, have been asking for these changes for years. Why?

  • Cost: From 2012 to 2016, lot costs quadrupled meaning that before a developer could even START building a house, they would have had over $125,000 in pre-development costs between land and permits alone. Having the ability to build paired single-family homes (also known as a duplex) enables housing providers to cut down the cost by one-third –allowing providers to serve more families.
  • Timing: The new Land Development Code allows for a more transparent and reliable development process, which still allows ample opportunities for public input, and paves the way for fast-tracking all housing projects.
  • Funding: With the new Land Development Code, Fort Collins will meet the requirements to access additional funding at the state level, secured by Prop 123.
