June is Scoliosis Awareness Month and Square ONE wants people to know that Scoliosis can be corrected if caught early enough!
Square ONE is located at 257 East Boardwalk Dr., Fort Collins, CO 80525 and led by one of the top international Scoliosis experts, Dr. Chris Gubbels.
Early detection of scoliosis allows for more effective conservative treatments and reduces the risk of curve progression. High quality studies have found that non-operative treatment for scoliosis with bracing or specific exercises may reduce the number of patient’s that progress to requiring surgery. These treatments need to be applied to smaller curves prior to skeletal maturity, emphasizing the need for early detections.

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spine deformity characterized by lateral bending and rotational curvature of the spine. The most common form is idiopathic scoliosis, which usually becomes evident in early adolescent years in approximately 3% of children under that age of 16.

This spinal disorder can have a significant impact on the physical and psychosocial health of affected individuals. Scoliosis may also be the initial presenting sign of underlying conditions such as heritable collagen disease, neurologic conditions, or skeletal dysplasia which may have been undetected until adolescence.

In 2015, The Scoliosis Research Society, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and American Academy of Pediatrics endorsed a position statement for the early detection and screening of scoliosis. Specifically, they recommended that girls be screened twice, at 10 and 12 years old and boys should be screened once between the ages of 13-14 years old, as scoliosis typically progresses during the first two years of puberty during rapid growth.
