The Ensight Skills Center will be offering Free Low Vision Assessments to residents of Larimer County and Boulder County starting in 2015. The new program is in conjunction with funding released by the Office on Aging. Larimer County Office on Aging has agreed to partner with Ensight to provide a limited number of free low vision assessments to individuals who are 60 years of age and over, living with significant vision loss from eye diseases (Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy) and other disorders resulting in vision loss. There is a great need in Larimer County for low vision services for the senior population and Ensight is excited to be able to offer financial assistance and this new free clinic. Currently, there are 35,541 (11.9%) residents of Larimer County who are 65 years of age and older. According to the Lighthouse International 2014 report, ”Among persons age 65 and older, an estimated 21% report some form of vision impairment”. That translates to approximately 6,000 people in Larimer County and 7,600 in Boulder County that need services provided by Ensight and additional organizations who specialize in services for the visually impaired.
Clients can be seen at Ensight’s main office in Fort Collins or at Onsite clinics throughout the county.
The Ensight Skills Center has been operating in Colorado since 2001. The unique medical model approach to visual rehabilitation has helped thousands of Coloradoans maintain independence and safety while they adapt their lives to live as a person with vision loss.
Each year, Ensight provides rehabilitation services to over 300 people who are struggling with vision loss. An assessment is done with a low vision optometrist and occupational therapist to determine the training and tools needed for the patient to be successful in maintaining tasks and remaining independent while practicing safety. Ensight’s evidence based program is effective in improving the quality of life in those we serve.
