Neenan Archistruction, a leading design-build firm specializing in innovative construction solutions, is proud to announce the groundbreaking of Northern Colorado’s new facility for Respite Care, Inc. Respite Care, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing short-term, quality care for children with developmental disabilities and respite for their families. This significant expansion will double the organization’s space, allowing it to better support families across Northern Colorado.
Since its establishment in 1981, Respite Care Inc. has been a pillar of support for families, offering an interactive, stimulating and safe environment that caters to the physical, emotional and social needs of each child. Currently serving 65 children at a time and providing nearly 50,000 hours of childcare annually, Respite Care’s expanded building space will enable them to extend their reach and provide peace of mind to more than 150 families at a time.
“Our mission is to meet the children we serve exactly where they are, and having a building designed with their specific needs in mind will make all the difference,” said Kristi Briles, Executive Director at Respite Care. “Our partnership with Neenan, in whom we have tremendous trust, allows us the opportunity to be involved in all stages of design and construction, giving us the opportunity to ensure this space enhances our ability to meet the needs of the families and children we serve.”
Neenan and Respite Care Inc. began their partnership more than two decades ago in 2003, when collaborating on Respite Care’s Fort Collins facility. Over the years, Neenan has worked hand in hand with Respite Care Inc. to renovate and maintain the original facility to meet its evolving needs. Respite Care maintains a staffing ratio that thoroughly ensures the highest level of care possible for each child. In addition to these staff ratios, the care facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and includes overnight care. Therefore, the space must feel and act as a home for staff and children throughout each phase of the day.
“Respite Care Inc. has done so much to empower individuals and families of those with developmental disabilities, and it is truly admirable to see an organization that embraces these extraordinary individuals,” said Bill Pigg, President of Neenan Archistruction. “Whenever we have an opportunity to use our expertise to benefit the lives of Respite Care employees and clients, we are eager to do so.”
The new building is designed not only to accommodate the children but to embrace their unique needs. By incorporating accessible features, the facility will ensure a safe and enriching environment for all children. Every detail has been carefully considered with the child’s experience in mind.
The design also prioritizes ease of movement, with flooring and site features planned to eliminate transitions or bumps that could hinder those using walkers or wheelchairs. By avoiding a two-story structure, Respite Care Inc. aims to provide a seamless experience without the need for stairs, ramps or elevators. Additionally, the mechanical system has been tailored to deliver temperature control at a child-friendly level, while the play area features a squishy floor to minimize the risk of injuries during playtime. There are dedicated sensory spaces, which include cocoon swings and color changing lights, promoting feelings of safety.
Respite Care’s new facility, located in Timnath, will provide a total of 21,000 square feet to support their vital work. This expansion will enable Respite Care Inc. to continue its mission of enhancing the lives of children with developmental disabilities and their families.

Project Quick Facts:
- Rendering Photo Credit: Neenan Archistruction
- Acreage of the site: 2.5 acres
- Projected grand opening timing: February/March 2026
- Number of current Respite Care employees & number of anticipated new employees (will the expanded space allow for more employee hires?): The new space will allow for many new hires, however, there is not a set number of new hires at this time. Respite Care currently has 55 employees but will ramp up to 65 for the summer. Currently, Respite Care serves 65 kids in our facility at one time. The new building will allow them to serve 150+ kids at one time.
- Reason for moving to a new building: Respite Care was so out of space in our current facility that the Development/Fundraising team has to office at an offsite location. This new facility will bring the team back together under one roof! Additionally, the Timnath building is a more central location for families across Weld County.
