Narrative, Reality and the Economic Future of Northern Colorado

Jun 8, 2026 | From the CEO

The Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce, alongside FNBO, recently hosted a conversation with Dr. Christopher Thornberg as part of our NCP Insider: Economic Insights event.

Dr. Thornberg is a thought-provoking economist who left a teaching position at UCLA’s business school in 2006 to found Beacon Economics, one of the nation’s most respected economic research organizations. His remarks offered a timely look at the economic forces shaping Northern Colorado and the broader business environment.

If you missed the conversation, you can view Dr. Thornberg’s presentation slides here.

Narrative Versus Reality

My biggest takeaway from Dr. Thornberg’s comments was the concept of narrative versus reality. I left with a renewed desire to take individual responsibility, pull back the curtain on the narratives we hear and make sure the data and reality match before leaping to policy and financial decisions.

That challenge is especially important for business leaders. We operate in an environment filled with headlines, assumptions and competing interpretations of what is happening around us. It is easy to react to the story being told. It is harder, but far more important, to slow down long enough to ask whether the story is supported by the facts.

That is part of the value of bringing conversations like this to Northern Colorado. Our region is growing, changing and maturing. The decisions we make now, as employers, civic leaders and community partners, should be grounded in clear thinking and honest assessment.

Thank You to FNBO

FNBO was a key partner in this Northern Colorado Prospers 2.0 event. Gretchen Wahl, FNBO Regional Vice President of Commercial Banking, shared thoughtful comments before the program and helped set the stage for an insightful and productive conversation.

Her remarks captured both the reality of our current economy and the opportunity in front of Northern Colorado:

On behalf of FNBO, we’re delighted to be here and grateful to the Fort Collins Area Chamber for bringing us together tonight.

We’re gathering at a particularly interesting moment in our regional economy. While Colorado’s economy is projected to grow at a rate to outpace the national economy, the Northern Colorado region is experiencing a meaningful transition. We’re seeing a shift from the rapid growth of recent years to a more balanced, sustainable trajectory. This isn’t a story of decline; it’s a story of maturation and strategic opportunity.

What does this mean for businesses and communities in Northern Colorado? It means we’re operating in an environment that rewards innovation, productivity and strategic thinking. When employment can’t expand as quickly as we’d like, productivity becomes paramount. When traditional growth patterns shift, new opportunities emerge for those positioned to see them.

Colorado continues to show above-average growth in GDP and personal income, even as employment growth moderates. Personal income and wages are rising, indicators that speak to the quality of economic activity, not just quantity.

At FNBO, we understand that economic transitions create both challenges and opportunities. Whether you’re navigating workforce development, capital investment decisions, or strategic planning in an environment of slower population growth and shifting demographics, we’re here to support the businesses and communities that make Northern Colorado thrive.

Today’s conversation is about more than numbers. It’s about understanding the forces shaping our region and positioning ourselves for sustainable success. Thank you for being here, and we look forward to a productive discussion.

— Gretchen Wahl, FNBO Regional Vice President of Commercial Banking

I am grateful to FNBO for their partnership and to everyone who joined us for this important conversation. Northern Colorado’s economy is not static. It is moving, adjusting and creating new questions for all of us who care about the future of business in this region.

As we continue this work through Northern Colorado Prospers, the Chamber will remain focused on bringing people together around the issues that matter most to our region’s economic strength.

Good decisions begin with good information. And good leadership begins with the willingness to test the narrative against reality.
