What is your first memory of learning the needs of your community? Were you influenced by your family, school, religious organization, friends or lived experience? Did you have the knowledge and resources to feel empowered to make change in your community?
In Larimer County, we have a program that does just that — Give Next is a school-based youth grantmaking program for middle and high school students that inspires youth to build community.
Through the Give Next program, local businesses, foundations, and individuals become classroom donors by providing each participating school with $5,000 to award to nonprofits in Larimer County. With the financial support of these generous donors, students design and manage their own grantmaking programs. The grantmaking process is the tool through which the program shifts power to youth, helps youth build an understanding of complex social issues, and connects youth to each other and their community.
Classroom donors help the next generation learn the meaning of giving time, talent, and treasure to address local needs. We’re fortunate to have several Chamber of Commerce members as classroom donors. Here are some reflections these local businesses have shared with us:
