Fort Collins Performs Symphony Peter and the Wolf Family Concert, sponsored by the Friends of the Symphony

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Friends of the (Fort Collins) Symphony invite children and their families to a live performance of the favorite symphonic classic, Peter and the Wolf, at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the Timberline Church Main Auditorium. The Fort Collins Symphony–under the baton of Maestro Wes Kenney–and dancers from Canyon Concert Ballet– will breathe life into the adventures of Peter and his animal friends.

Ukrainian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote this musical tale in 1936 as a way to introduce children to the sounds and instruments of an orchestra. Young Peter, with the help of his grandfather and local hunters, saves his animal friends from a ferocious wolf. All of the characters are represented by different instruments: the twittering bird is played by the flute, a noisy duck by the oboe, a sneaky cat by the clarinet, the dangerous wolf by the French horn, the grandfather by the bassoon, the hunters by the timpani, and Peter by the strings.

In addition, the Symphony will play composer Russell Peck’s The Thrill of the Orchestra. Written in 1985, this work demonstrates the imaginative sounds that an orchestra can make both collectively and as individual instruments. This magical one-hour concert will delight children, parents, grandparents, and the young at heart!

To learn more about Peter and the Wolf, please access the Fort Collins Symphony’s demonstration videos and activity guide. All are available at FCSymphony.org/Peter.

This annual Family Concert is proudly sponsored by the Friends of the Symphony (FoS), a support organization of the Fort Collins Symphony and its educational outreach initiatives. In addition, the FoS members provide monetary support and volunteer hours for many of the Symphony’s concerts and educational programs.

Now in his 21st season, the FCS is led by Music Director and Conductor Maestro Wes Kenney.

The Fort Collins Symphony’s 100th Anniversary Season is dedicated to the memory of long-time board and FoS member John E. Roberts.
