Fort Collins, Colo. (Oct. 27, 2016) – As part of its mission to provide safe and affordable housing for all, Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity gathered nearly 300 community members for its WE BUILD Breakfast at Poudre High School on Oct. 19. The breakfast celebrated Fort Collins Habitat’s ongoing partnership with Poudre High School’s Geometry in Construction class and raised more than $60,000 in gifts and pledges for current and future home building.
For the third year in a row, Fort Collins Habitat has partnered with the Geometry in Construction class to give 80 students in grades 9-11 real world math and construction experience and teach them the value of community service. Throughout the course of class, the students will build a house in the parking lot of Poudre High School that will be sold to a Habitat homebuyer family. The first wall of the home was raised after the breakfast concluded.
“The WE BUILD breakfast is an excellent example of our generous community and a demonstration of how Habitat for Humanity only can continue to create and sell affordable homes with the support of our entire community.” said Kristin Candella, Executive Director of Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity, “As we embark on the next 48 homes, now more than ever, we need the commitment of our partners to build it.”
The breakfast rolled out plans for Harmony Cottages, Fort Collins Habitat’s largest housing development project to date. This project will create 48 new homes on the southeast corner of Harmony Road and Taft Hill Road, which will allow approximately 144 people to enjoy safe and affordable housing. The neighborhood will further include landscaped spaces and a greenbelt, featuring a pocket park with a playground. Harmony Cottages is part of the Fort Collins Affordable Housing Plan, which increases the affordable owner-occupied housing units by 10 percent and establishes long-term homeownership opportunities. Donors who make a multi-year pledge of $1,000 or more per year for 3 years will have an inscription included on the playground as part of the ‘Legacy of Laughter’ campaign. Further details may be found in the project’s video.
The We Build Breakfast would not have been possible without the support of its generous sponsors. Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity would like to thank presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, the Poudre High School catering class for preparing the delicious breakfast, and Starbucks on Elizabeth and City Park for donating all the coffee.
