Global Screening: Sama in the Forest, Q&A with researcher Coralynn Davis, At the Lyric Cinema

June 25 @ 6:15 pm - 8:00 pm

A woman in a patterned dress stands in a sunlit forest, holding a round object. Overlaid text promotes the "Sama in the Forest" global screening with a Q&A at the Lyric Cinema on June 25, hosted by the Global Village Museum.

Join us at the Lyric Cinema for a special screening of Sama in the Forest (2023, 75 mins), a hybrid documentary set in contemporary Mithila, where ancient cultural traditions meet the pressures of a globalized world.

The film follows the legend of Sama, a young princess slandered, cursed, and banished by her own father, brought to life through women’s storytelling, elaborate traditional paintings, dramatization, and a yearly festival in her honor. Students and teachers at the Mithila Art Institute are at the heart of the film, alongside community voices that paint an honest picture of social tensions in Mithila today.

Following the screening, join a Q&A with Dr. Coralynn Davis, Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Anthropology at Bucknell University and the film’s producer. A three-time Fulbright Grant recipient and author of Maithil Women’s Tales, Dr. Davis brings decades of ethnographic research to this conversation.

This event takes place at the Lyric Cinema. We hope to see you there!
