Inspired by the ethos expressed by the writer, Zane Grey, then Larimer County Commissioner, John Clarke, issued a 13-page booklet entitled, Code of the West: The Realities of Rural Living in 1997. Within it, the Code issues disclaimers and offers advice for those looking to embrace life outside the city.  Calling attention to specific issues to which new arrivals should be aware, the central themes are integrity and self-reliance.

Although detachment from the urban lifestyle offers many advantages, inconveniences abound for those unfamiliar with living in remote areas, according to the booklet.  Don’t expect emergency responders or the postal carrier to find you.  Road maintenance may be your responsibility.  Agricultural uses create a bucolic setting, though animals create smells and farming is loud, dirty and may require bright lights when and where neighbors may not like.  Code of the West: Is it Still Relevant?

Please join us on Monday, June 15, at Horse & Dragon Brewing for a thoughtful dialogue on issues that are important to the well-being of our community.

CIVIC Conversations is sponsored by Elevations Credit Union and hosted by the Fort Collins Area Chamber.
