Bach’s Magnificat is a delightful and spirited masterwork with text from the Gospel of Luke. After learning that she will give birth to the Son of God, Mary visits her cousin Elisabeth, who says, “Blessed is the fruit of your womb!” and Mary answers, “My soul magnifies the Lord (Magnificat anima mea Dominum) and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”
Bach’s Magnificat is one of the great choral/orchestral works of our time, and a thrill for both audiences and singers. The second half of the concert will play on the word “anima” from the Magnificat, meaning “soul”. Selections – both sacred and secular – that connect to “soul” will be performed.
