Before the fall of Rome, as much as two-thirds of the Roman army were mercenaries. Mercenaries were not fighting Rome’s battles for glory, loyalty or to uphold a set of values they found important. They were there to make money; an ill-omen to the Roman state, hanging by the threads before inevitable ruin.Today, the marketplace finds itself in a similar state, with artists disallusioned by the sellsword logic of modern society. It is no wonder they have so much to say through the creative works they put their blood, sweat and tears into.
Mercenaries is a show that recognizes this tradition as a means to a greater end – to create for the sake of expression. To try to move the audience in a way we were moved to create it. As with most group shows, preferences may vary.
We hope you enjoy Mercenaries and that something here touches your heart in the way creating it touched ours.
