Kate Hamill’s Adaptation Puts a Modern Twist on the Timeless Tale
This summer, OpenStage Theatre & Company invites audiences to fall in love all over again with Jane Austen’s classic tale, but like you’ve never seen it before. Pride and Prejudice, adapted with wit and irreverence by Kate Hamill and directed by Heather Ostberg Johnson, will play under the stars at Columbine Health Systems Park from June 7 to July 12, 2025.
This isn’t your great-auntie’s Austen. Bursting with energy, charm, and modern flair, this effervescent adaptation transforms Austen’s beloved novel into a lively, theatrical experience that’s as fresh and relatable today as ever. The headstrong Lizzy Bennet is determined never to marry, but navigating love, family expectations, and a certain maddening Mr. Darcy proves to be more complicated — and hilarious — than she anticipated.
“We’re leaning into the boldness and theatricality of Kate Hamill’s adaptation,” says director Heather Ostberg Johnson. “This production is bold, surprising, and full of heart. It’s a love story, yes, but also a sharp, satirical look at gender roles and the timeless dance of relationships.”
Audiences are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and their favorite people to enjoy an unforgettable evening in the park. With nightly food trucks, a relaxed atmosphere, and the thrill of live theatre under the open sky, Pride and Prejudice promises to be the perfect summer night out. Scheduled food trucks include La Campechana, Angry Hippie, Walrus Ice Cream, Southern Soul, Wild Brats, Bedrock BBQ, Fat Tomato, Ciao, and Santa Elena’s.
