The final phase of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s US 287 (College Avenue) resurfacing project is scheduled to begin July 27. The project will extend from Mulberry Street to Harmony Road and is expected to take approximately six months to complete with an anticipated winter shut-down.
A public open house on the project is planned for 5-7 p.m. on July 22 at the City of Fort Collins Community Room, 215 N. Mason St. Representatives from CDOT and Martin Marietta will be on-hand to answer questions about the project.
During construction, drivers can expect lane closures along College Avenue. Those closures will be communicated through weekly alerts through CDOT’s email and text alert service, as well as to local media. To sign up for alerts, visit the project website at http://www.codot.gov/projects/
During the 2015 construction season, crews will initially focus on road and bridge rehabilitation in preparation for full-road resurfacing. Although previous overlays have extended the life of the road, major rehabilitation is required from Mulberry to University Avenue to improve safety, drainage and extend the life of the road. The last major work in this area took place more than 20 years ago.
“Anyone who drives on College Avenue knows how much this work is needed,” said Ben Rowles, CDOT project engineer. “The area from Mulberry to University needs extensive work below the surface of the roadway to ensure we don’t need to come back any time soon to deal with these same problems.”
The entire project area will not be under active construction at the same time. The project team has developed a plan that will complete the project in sections to minimize traffic impacts. Initially, the most extensive work will begin on southbound College Avenue between Mulberry and University with full-depth roadway rehabilitation, including the removal of concrete panels, which have been covered by multiple asphalt overlays. Although the work in this section will continue through September, crews will make every effort to minimize traffic impacts.
At the same time, other crews will also begin work on the south end of the corridor near Harmony Road to make necessary spot repairs to concrete curb, gutter and sidewalks. Work will proceed from south to north. This project also includes improvements to the bridge over Spring Creek. Intermittent lane closures may be necessary in these areas.
This is the third and final phase of the work on SH287. The first phase went from Harmony Road south to Carpenter Road and was completed last year. Phase 2 went from Carpenter to 29th Street in Loveland and is being completed now.
