Bas Bleu Theatre Company of Fort Collins is excited to announce its third mainstage production of the season: LOST IN YONKERS, a coming-of-age story centering around two brothers, Arty and Jay. They are left to live with their formidable Grandma Kurnitz and mentally challenged yet enthusiastic Aunt Bella so their father can travel to earn money to pay off medical debts accrued during their mother’s illness, who is now deceased. Arty and Jay grow and begin to mature through discoveries and challenges over life, handicaps, and most of all over their grandmother’s autocracy.
Already a well-recognized and awarded playwright, Neil Simon, exceeds his past accomplishments in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Grandma Kurnitz’s harsh disciplinary approach has traumatized not only Bella, her sister Gert, and her brothers Louie and Eddie (the boy’s father). Ill-prepared for the realities they encounter, Arty and Jay learn to survive and ‘navigate’ in this dysfunctional household, learning about love, responsibility, and family value. To avoid overstating his characters, Simon has managed to capture and convey not only the heartache but also the humor embedded in family dynamics.
“The wounds run so deep that one feels this just may be Neil Simon’s most honest play.” – Frank Rich, The New York Times.
