Banner Health Northern Colorado today announced that McKee Medical Center and North Colorado Medical Center have been recognized by Healthgrades for clinical excellence in Pulmonary Care. Healthgrades is the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital, and the right care. This achievement was released today with other new findings in the Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation, which evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

The new report highlights the disparity in hospital performance for specific conditions and procedures both nationally and regionally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2012 through 2014, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving five stars as a group, on average 222,392 lives could potentially have been saved and 166,086 complications could potentially have been avoided.* The following examples help demonstrate the variations that exist in mortality rates at the local level in the Denver area:

  • Of the 16 hospitals located within the area, the 2016 study reveals that although these hospitals are just minutes away from each other, risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates for Pneumonia ranged from 1.2 percent on the low end to 4.7 percent on the high end, which is a more than 3.9-fold difference in mortality rates.
  • Of the 16 hospitals located within the area, the 2016 study reveals that although these hospitals are just minutes away from each other, risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) ranged from 0.0 percent on the low end to 2.2 percent on the high end.

A five-star rating indicates that a hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.
North Colorado Medical Center has been named one of America’s Top 100 Hospitals in Pulmonary Care for four consecutive years and is a Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals 2015 recipient. In the report released today, Healthgrades also recognized North Colorado Medical Center for clinical excellence in Treatment of Stroke and Critical Care.
McKee Medical Center has achieved Top 10 percent in the nation for Pulmonary care for six consecutive years. McKee also achieved five-star rating for Treatment of Respiratory Failure.  McKee was also named one of America’s 100 Best Hospital 2014 by Healthgrades.

“These awards demonstrate the consistency with which both North Colorado Medical Center and McKee Medical Center perform on an annual basis,” said Rick Sutton, CEO of Banner Health’s Northern Colorado service area. “We place a constant focus and commitment on providing excellent patient care in meeting the needs of the patients we serve.” The complete Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
