In honor of Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16, all dads will enjoy free admission to the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures on Saturday, June 15, from 11 am to 5 pm.
The Global Village Museum has four galleries, two rotating and two permanent. The rotating Main Gallery hosts three to four exhibitions per year, and the rotating Hall Gallery highlights local artists and organizations. The permanent galleries are Mundoville and John E. Roberts Village Arts. The former showcases international folk art as well as the world in miniature. The latter is home to world folk art, fine art, and artifacts from Africa and Asia that were donated by local collectors and founding members.
Currently on exhibit in the Main Gallery is One World, One Family, honoring indigenous peoples around the world and their cultures. The photographs and items are from the collections of John Lincoln Baxter, Connie Baxter Marlow, Andrew Cameron Bailey, and Alison Baxter Marlow. The display is an intergenerational exploration and celebration of native peoples on this earth. Native American peoples represented include the Hopi, Wabanaki, and Ute. Native peoples of Mexico represented are Tarahumara, Huichol, Lacondon Maya, and Chamulan Maya. Other indigenous groups that are highlighted are the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert and the Uyghur people of the Chinese-Tibetan border region. The Museum’s Hall Gallery features photographs of Native American objects by David O. Marlow.
The Museum also features an international music room and the Losel Doll House. The Losel Dolls were handcrafted by Buddhist monks living in exile in India after the takeover of Tibet by Communist China in 1959. The Dolls preserve the cultural dress and costumes of the Tibetans, and the Museum’s collection is one of the largest in the country. For its younger visitors, the Museum offers a fascinating gnome treasure hunt.
