Fort Collins is a unique biking community in the US. The City has adopted an Active Mode Plan focusing efforts and funding toward building a transportation network. That makes it easy and safe to use all modes of transportation. This makes communities more robust, resilient, inclusive, and healthier. Montana has embraced bicycle and pedestrian priority from day one as the primary goal of New Urbanism in creating a walkable/bikeable community. Can urban intersections be designed in such a way where motor traffic, cycling, and walking flow smoothly and where the potential conflicts of these very different types of interactions are made less complicated and less dangerous? We believe the Dutch have proven that answer to be “yes.” Intersections are most important in making cycling safer and more accessible.
