September marks the 16th annual celebration of Life Insurance Awareness Month. In years past, this informational campaign has provided education and resources for consumers who are often unaware of the benefits of life insurance and how to determine how much they need. In 2018’s LIMRA report, 40% of Americans, including 60% of Millennials, self-reported feeling uniformed around their personal life insurance needs. In addition, Americans tend to over-estimate the cost of life insurance.

This fall, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause significant upheaval in the lives of Americans, taking time to consider the financial consequences of a sudden death in the family can seem like a priority and something to be procrastinated at the same time. The truth is, because this can be such a difficult topic, there is almost never a “good time” to go through the process. “I have known family’s whose loved ones were uninsured when they passed. The consequences were heartbreaking. Families should not be forced to move from their home, sell precious possessions, and experience financial insecurity all while grieving the loss of someone dear to them,” states Jennifer Lewis, M.Ed., Agent/Owner at Farmers Insurance – J. Lewis Agency.

There are abundant resources available to learn more about this topic. One great article that covers the basics can be found here: https://lifehappens.org/life-insurance-101/ . Another way to learn more is to have a conversation with your personal insurance agent. Your agent is there to provide compassionate and care while walking you through the options.
