Winning Film to Play During The Arc of Larimer County’s 7th Annual Film Festival, Filmmaker to Receive $500 Cash Prize
The Arc of Larimer County is accepting film submissions for its 7th Annual ReFrame Disability Film Festival on March 8, 2019, at Colorado State University’s Lory Student Center Theater. During the festival, the nonprofit will screen the winning film as well as honor and award the winning filmmaker with a $500 cash prize.
The Film Festival, held every year in March, aligns with National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to help eliminate stereotypes about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The festival showcases short films from filmmakers around the country that either spotlight I/DD issues or are made by or feature individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In past years, local filmmakers have provided more than 10 of the films featured during the festival.
“Over the last six years, The Arc of Larimer County has been overwhelmed with the amount of thoughtful, awareness-driven entries to our annual film festival,” said Cari Brown, The Arc of Larimer County’s Systems Advocacy Specialist and Communications Coordinator. “With each film submitted, we are one step closer to helping eliminate I/DD segregation in our communities. Submit your films today and join our movement to ReFrame Disability.”
The Film Festival encourages submissions from all types of filmmakers: amateurs and professionals living in Colorado alike. The winner is chosen based on the work that best illustrates the ReFrame Disability theme.
The 2018-winning film, “The Adventures of Rick and Lisa,” directed by Kevin Rabon, documented a northern Colorado couple living with intellectual and developmental disabilities and how they found one another. Rabon, unable to attend the festival, donated his cash prize to Rick and Lisa Keeton.
“We did this film just to educate people about disability,” said Lisa Keeton, who was born blind. “We are human beings, and you can treat us like anyone else.”
Some films are humorous, some are serious, but they all accomplish one common goal – spreading awareness. Visit arclc.org/film for film submission guidelines and details. The deadline for submissions is January 15, and the winner will be announced in February 2019.
