On January 10, the Board of Larimer County Commissioners adopted the 2021 International Codes [I-codes] with local amendments, as well as administrative amendments for the 2020 National Electrical Code. New I-codes are adopted every three years when the International Code Council publishes them. County building permits initiated on or after March 1 will use the new codes, while existing permits will continue under the 2018 or earlier codes that were in effect when they began.

The code changes include updates to energy codes, Electric Vehicle-readiness, radon mitigation, roof coverings, accessibility, sprinklers, swimming pools, wildfire hazard mitigation and short-term rentals. Adopting the most current codes keeps Larimer County at the forefront of building science, establishes consistency with codes of neighboring jurisdictions, aligns building codes with Larimer County Land Use codes and Climate Smart goals, and maintains county eligibility for FEMA-awarded grants. The new codes also ensure a continued high rating by the Insurance Services Organization, which can affect insurance rates for property owners throughout Larimer County.
