The front range’s newest brewery is set to open its doors on April 22nd, Earth Day. The opening date is not a coincidence. Salt Road made a decision years ago to make conscience choices to brew responsibly. A large part of that commitment was to use ingredients grown, harvested, malted, cultivated, and sourced here in our local community.

Most beer styles brewed today were developed using ingredients from the immediate area of the time. Every region had their own beers which ranged from light to dark, malty to hoppy. The Salt Road, which was a major trading route through Europe during the middle ages helped facilitate incorporation of new ingredients from different areas of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and eventually the Americas.

The goal of Salt Road Brewing is to give a Colorado spin to historic beer styles by brewing them with local ingredients, as well as create some exciting new styles by combining those local ingredients in new ways that perhaps haven’t been thought of before. Colorado is also a melting pot of the very best from across the country and the world. So the brewers will look for influences and ingredients from more far off places to compliment our local ingredients.

Brewers in Colorado have unique access to more local ingredients than just about any part of the country. The majority of Salt Road Brewing’s beers will incorporate ingredients from Troubadour Maltings in Fort Collins, Root Shoot Malting in Loveland, Colorado Hop Company in Longmont, and Inland Island Yeast Labs in Denver. And yes, every beer brewed at Salt Road will include a touch of sea salt.

Since the earliest times, beer has been at the center of the community. Whether around the fire, or in the local tavern or inn, friends and family came together over a pint to discuss what was happening around them and to form bonds and settle disagreements. We hope to continue that tradition in Old Town Fort Collins.

Cheers!
